6. To what extent is digital distribution vital to the media area you have studied

In a world where different technological innovations are used to perform basic tasks, it was no surprise that it consumed the filming industry as well. Now, one doesn’t have to go to a movie theater to watch a film. They may easily access about any film through their devices. As a result, digital distribution became extremely vital to films.  Digital distribution reaches a wider range of audiences and allow institutions to profit greatly by utilizing home exhibition.

Nowadays in a world that is consumed with advanced technologies and devices, digital distribution is a main factor that contributes to a films’ ongoing success. We are able to view almost any film through our devices. This allows the film to reach a wider range of audiences, and it was made possible by home exhibition. Home exhibition granted people who weren’t able to view the film in the movie theater the opportunity to view it anywhere at any given moment.  One way companies did this was through releasing them on streaming services. For example, the film Black Panther, produced by Kevin Feige and distributed by Walt Disney Pictures Motions Studios, was released in theaters on February 16, 2018, and then released to the streaming service ‘Netflix’ in September that same year. Even though this film was a huge success in the box office making a whopping $1.344 billion, it didn’t catch the eyes of everyone in the world. Some people depend on streaming services like ‘Netflix’ for a source of entertainment rather than going to the theater or watching television. These streaming services don’t have commercial breaks to advertise other films so those watching it will be oblivious to them. As a result, when those streaming services network with conglomerate companies and film studios to get permission to show their film, it reaches an untapped audience which can build publicity for the company, studio, and film. Black Panther remained on ‘Netflix’ until March 3, 2020, when it began to show on Disney Plus which is a subsidiary under the conglomerate Walt Disney Studios . Another way companies can reach a wider range of audiences is to release the on DVDs, Blu-Ray, and television.  For instance, take the film Beauty and the Beast, released on March 17, 2017, produced by Mandeville Films and distributed by Walt Disney Pictures.  A few months after its release in the theaters, it was released on Blu-Ray, DVD, Digital HD, and ‘On Demand’ on June 6, 2017.  It’s non- theater release allowed people with basic cable and access to devices such as laptops and DVD players to view the film for as many times as they want.

Digital Distribution has not only granted institutions more exposure, but it has also allowed them to profit greatly. When films are released on easily accessible platforms through home exhibition, it can allow institutions to profit more in addition to what they already made in the Box Office. Streaming services directly pay movie institutions a base price to have their film on their application. Then, money gets added onto that base price as the amount of viewers increases. Referring back to the film The Nutcracker and the Four Realms, released October 29, 2018, and distributed by Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures, made an amazing $174 million in the Box Office. It was released on ‘Netflix’ on May 28th, 2019, remains there to this day, and is still wildly popular. Even though the movie was released about 2 years ago, the institution that was responsible for making this film still receives money the longer it stays on there and the more views it receives.  Institutions also profit off of cable television showings of their films.  In order to show the film the television networks or the cable companies themselves buy the movie from the institutions. The film Despicable Me, released July 9, 2010 and produced by Illumination, Universal Pictures, is available on most cable companies on ‘On Demand’ and shows on television networks such as FX and Disney Channel. The institution that created this film received payment for their movie to be distributed on these platforms.  So not only do the institutions profit greatly from their profits in the Box Office, but on top of that they also profit from the showing of their films through different platforms that are easily accessible to different audiences.

Digital distribution is extremely vital to films. This is especially true this day and age where technology has consumed our every day lives. Digital Distribution reaches a wider range of audiences and allow institutions to profit greatly by utilizing home exhibition. These result in granting the institutions more exposure and overall success.

Final Blogs: Final Project- Movie Creative Critical Reflection

Once our movie was finally complete, my group members and I focused our attention on the creative critical response (CCR). This CCR was a bit different from the rest. Instead of it being typed, it was being recorded. My group members and I learned that we should take a creative approach when doing this. The approach that we decided to take towards the CCR was a television interview. We came up with a plan to meet at one of our houses and do the interviews. To make it more proper and easier, we were going to get one of our friends to be the interviewer. However, due to the COVID-19 (Coronavirus) pandemic, plans changed. Due to the virus, there were many rules and regulations placed on us for our safety and the safety of others. We were told to self-quarantine and social distance. This left us lost on what to do. We were concerned as to how we were going to get this done with the self-quarantine and social distancing order. Fortunately, one of my group members came up with a brilliant idea. This idea was for each of us to send in videos of ourselves answering one CCR question. To prevent confusion, we assigned questions. One of my group members enlisted the help of her friend wh agreed to be the interviewer or host. That same group member volunteered to put together the videos to make one. Some of the videos had to be reshot because the time limit was not reached. Once those videos were done and all put together, the CCR was finally complete. We believe that it came out well.

Final Blog: Second Project

At this time when my group members and I became more comfortable with the filming process, it was time to jump into our next project. This project was a music video. For this project, each group got to choose any song they wanted as long as it was school appropriate. This granted us creative control. So, we were quite pleased and enthusiastic about the journey. The song my group members and I chose was, Catch Me Outside by Florida native rapper, Ski Mask The Slump God. The planning process for this project was a breeze. Due to the song's fun, hype and jumpy beat and flow my group members and I decided to make the music video a fun "Girls night out" type of theme. However, that's not all. We also revealed at the end that it was all a dream that everyone was having at the same time. We shot the video at the Sawgrass Mills Mall during the night. A few of the scenes were shot at one of my group members' houses. Everyone in the group was an actor in the video and a director. When filming this video, not everything ran quite smoothly. For instance, not every store in the mall allowed us to film. Regardless, we worked around our shortcomings and were able to produce an amazing music video. During the filming process, we truly enjoyed ourselves and had extremely high hopes for the outcome of the music video.  After Lauren finished editing the music video, the rest of my group members and I were amazed at how good it came out. In the end, we were very pleased with the project and couldn't wait to begin the next one.

Final Blogs: Final Project- Movie

After about a year's worth of preparation, it was finally time for the last project. This project was to film the first two minutes of a movie. In the first two minutes of every movie, you will see the titles. The titles introduce the main credits. This includes the production studio, the film studio, the director(s), the actors, etc. It was highly stressed that we do not make the movie seem like a trailer. That is why certain movie genres were ruled out when deciding on one for the film. For example, comedy was ruled out because in the first two minutes of a movie it would be difficult to tell that the movie is a comedy. However, deciding on what genre our movie should be wasn't a problem. My group members and I were sold on the idea of doing a thriller. After we decided on the genre, we came up with three different plots. In the end, we went with Aaliyah's plot because it was the most original and wouldn't be too difficult to do. Once this was settled and the filming process began, we found ourselves running into problems when it came to our schedules. As a result, we got really behind on filming, but things began to calm down and eventually, we got a majority of our scenes done to have something descent to turn in for the peer review. After we analyzed what the other group said about our film and it was time to reshoot, we knew exactly what we needed to switch, add-in, or take out. Not too long after this when my group members and I were planning the reshoot filming schedule, the schools closed due to the COVID-19 (Corona Virus) Pandemic. We thought that this would be a disaster, but instead, it gave us more time to reshoot. Even though we didn't have the camera from the school, all of my group members had an iPhone 11 which has been cleared to use for filming. Once we finished filming Lauren began editing and the film came out amazing. Though it didn't start out too great at first, everything started to come together to eventually create one of the best projects we have ever done.

Final Blogs: First Project- Commercial

The first project that my group members and I worked on was the commercial. When beginning this project we had high hopes for the outcome. To start off the project each group was given an identical list of companies to choose from to advertise for. The company that my group members and I chose was McDonald's. We focused our attention on the "Happy Meal". More specifically, the toy that comes with it. We chose this approach to appeal to the target audience: children. In the typical McDonald's commercials, you would see a happy family eating their meals together, and the kids playing with their new toys. These commercials imply that the children are the center of the household. To add on, when children see something that they want, typically on the television, they run and tell their parent(s) and the majority of the time their parent(s) would say yes because they can't seem to refuse their young one. So, once that the McDonald's "Happy Meal" commercial airs and the toy catches the children's eye, the sales of the product will increase.

 At the time the toy that came with it, for females, was the Barbie Doll. Once we discovered this we knew exactly how we wanted to film our commercial. The costumes for the commercial were casual, child based clothing for the actors playing the children, casual adult clothing for the actor playing the mother, and plain black pants, shirt, and visor for the actor playing the McDonald’s employee. The lighting in the commercial was natural. The actors were everyone in the group: Lauren, Aaliyah, Anishkaneel, and I. There was no makeup used for the making of this commercial. The props that we will be using are the McDonalds Happy Meal box and the contents that come in it: the sandwich/ chicken nuggets, a small fries, a small drink (milk, juice, or soda), apple slices, and a toy. The setting of the scene was the Upper Classmen Patio outside and, briefly, the doors of the Media Center. For this project, we didn't have much time to film. We were only allowed to film on campus and during the class period for two days. This became quite frustrating because we found ourselves trying to rush to make sure everything is correct, and we had to return to class once it was time for lunch which was an hour to thirty minutes after the beginning of class. This project didn't turn out how we had hoped, but it was our first project and it taught us a lot.

Re-shoot Blog: Day One

Today, Friday, March 20, 2020, my group members and I began to reshoot our film. We decided to film on this day because this day was the best for about all of us including one actor. The only people missing were my group member Anishkaneel and one of the actors, Bobby. However, this was not detrimental. We still had the two main characters. During this reshoot we were very productive. We only have a couple of n reshoot. In this reshoot we added and improved many different parts of the film. For instance, we reshot scenes that weren’t properly shot before. These scenes were scenes that were rushed and last minute. We also filmed scenes that weren’t shot before. In some of these scenes that were reshot the whole setting changed to make the scenes line up better. Another thing we approved was the sound. As previously mentioned in my past peer review blogs, one of the critiques that was given to us about our film was that the sound was awful. As a result, during this reshoot all of the actors made sure that they were louder. After we finished shooting everything, we decided to plan to plan for our next day reshooting. We plan on having everyone there to shoot whatever we have left to shoot. We predicted that this will be quick and we’ll have enough time to re-edit together. Overall, we were very satisfied with how today turned out and we have high hopes for the next day. Though, things may change due to the Corona Virus; all we can do is take it one step at a time.

Reshoot Blog: The Plan

Now that the peer review is over with, it is now time to reshoot. My group members and I planned to reshoot the week of the 15th, however the unexpected happened. Due to the Covid-19, commonly known as the Corona Virus, epidemic, school closed for that week. When first hearing this news my group members and I thought that it would be even better if we filmed during this week, but unfortunately we were given false hope. The government issued a state of emergency. As a result, we had to self quarantine ourselves, limit our time out, and not be around big groups. Even though it became a bit more difficult, we didn’t let this stop us. On Monday, March 16, 2020, we received a notification from our teacher. This notification said that, we should remain on schedule, in terms of our blog due dates, film submission, and Creative Critical Reflection (CCR), just in case since there wasn’t any word from Cambridge as of yet. On Tuesday, March 17, 2020, we planned to film on Thursday, March 19, 2020, and try to get as many scenes shot as possible. However, we got the news on Tuesday that school will be closed until April 15, 2020. Following this was another notification that said, all state wide tests we canceled and any requirements that are needed to be met in order for us to advance to the next grade or graduate will not be taken into account. My group members and I all had one question. What does this mean for our AICE classes and their exams?  We were confused and left in the dark. One thought that occurred was that we’re were pretty much done with the movie and everything else. Though, later that day we received a notification from our teacher that everything will go as planned according to the due dates and exam dates. Upon hearing this, my group members and I made a plan to film Friday, March 20, 2020. We suddenly became more optimistic. We have high hopes that everything will go as planned.

Editing Blog: The Re-edit

On Tuesday March 10, 2020, and Today, Thursday March 12, 2020, my group members and I decided to begin to re-edit our film. It was done using one of my group members’, Lauren, MacBook laptop. This same device was used to initially edit our film. The person assigned to edit was Lauren herself. She decided to begin in class since we were all there, and it was overall more convenient and efficient. The reason that prompted us to re-edit our film was the results of the peer review. As previously mentioned in my last two blogs, the class participated in a peer review. This allowed the film to be seen with a fresh set of eyes, and bring to light something that we might have missed. In the peer review sheet the other group states, in terms of editing, that we didn’t haven the necessary 10 titles. They also stated that the titles weren’t in the correct order. Although, this isn’t all that we did.

In class we also took our music into more consideration. We already had a plan for the music. However, the music we found didn’t fully fit the film’s mood in our opinion. As a result, Lauren and Anishkaneel began to search the internet using the search engine “Google” which led us to the website “Premium Beats”. This process wasn’t too nerve-racking, but it did take longer than expected. Fortunately, we never planned to use a copyrighted song. Instead we searched for royalty-free ominous music. Throughout this process there was one problem that we did run into. The people that made and provided the music for a website the search engine led us to, had their producer tag in it. This was a bit challenging since it wasn’t ideal, but we have not given up hope.

Reshoot Blog: Considering the Peer Review Notes

As I previously mentioned in my past blog, on Tuesday March 3,2020, the class participated in a peer review. In this peer review groups viewed each other’s films. This was done to provide a feedback on what they thought about it. On Friday March 5, 2020, we exchanged sheets. Each group now has the feedback on their film. This feedback will help us in the reshooting process. We will know what to change, what to add, and what to remove. So when it comes time for the reshoot we will be mindful of what we need to do to make our film more appealing. It will also allow us to be more confident in our film.

Unfortunately, my group members and I were not able to reshoot any of our scenes. The reason being was that we were all far too busy to do so. However, this time was not wasted. Instead we analyzed our feedback and talked about how we are going to make the film better. As I inferred from the peer review sheet, the group that reviewed us did not completely figure out the plot. This means that in the reshoot we need to make the story of the film more clear. We also didn't include the “Directed By” title at the end of the opening, didn’t place the titles in the correct order, and didn’t include a pan and diegetic sound.  To add on, according to the sheet, the dialogue was hard to hear in certain parts of the film. There were some positives in the film as well. These were good lighting, good sound quality, providing the necessary titles (with the exception of one), clean transitions, the necessary elements of C.A.M.S. (with the exception of two), and good acting. Upon reading this review, my group members and I figured out ways to implement these into our film during the reshoot.

Filming: Peer Review

On Tuesday, March 3, 2020, the class participated in a peer review. In this peer review we had to first import our films onto a flash drive. Then we had to give our flash drive to the group that was assigned to review our film. The point of this peer review is to have our film be seen with a pair of fresh eyes. In other words, be seen by someone who has never seen it before. This allows anything that we might have missed to come to light. It also allows for feedback that can aid you in the future. For instance, if a group of people in your target audience watches your film before it premieres, they can tell you what they liked and didn’t like about the movie so that once it premieres it doesn’t flop in the box office. As a result, when it comes time for the reshoot, we will know what we need to change or add to make our film more appealing and overall better.

Once importing our film onto a flash drive and giving it to the other group that was peer reviewing us, my group members, Aaliyah, Lauren, Anishka, and I were ready to peer review. My group was group 6, and the group we had to peer review was group 3. Their film was a thriller. My first impression of the film was that it was well structured; it was not choppy at all. All of the transitions were extremely smooth. To add on, it didn’t take long for me to understand the plot of the film. For a film with no dialogue, that to me was really impressive. This group’s film also kept me entertained throughout the duration of the film. The only thing that I felt could’ve been changed is their lighting. The lighting wasn’t bad, I just feel as though it could’ve been brighter so that all of the aspects or features of the film can be fully seen. Another thing that I can say about the film is, that it would’ve benefited a bit more if it had dialogue to make it seem less like a trailer. Overall, this film was amazing and if it were real, I would look forward to watching it in the movie theater.

Filming: The End

Today my group members and I completed our filming. All of us, with this exception of one, went to Lauren’s house to continue and finish filming. We had to finish 7 more scenes. These scenes were the hallway scene, the bedroom scene, the stairs scene, the dinner scene, and the trash can scene. Unfortunately, we could not get to shoot the proposal scene. For the scenes that were shot we finished shooting them all, but there were a few problems along the way. One problem was that we were behind schedule on this day. This means that the scenes that we filmed today were rushed. A scene that was really affected by this was the last scene, the bedroom scene. The main actors that were present, Aaliyah and Taliyah, had to leave once their ride came for them. This scene didn’t even get finished and was left out of the movie. We also didn’t have some of the necessary props to film in some scenes. We worked around not having these props, but they would’ve made the ambiance of the movie more impactful or expressed. Another problem was that we were missing the necessary actors. Bobby wasn’t available so we couldn’t do the proposal scene, and as I previously mentioned Aaliyah and Taliyah has to leave before we could finish the last scene. The final snag during filming was that we had to do many takes of the same scene. We did this because the actor(s) didn’t act out the scene the way that’s in the storyboard, or how we pictured it in our minds. To do all of these takes took about 30 minutes to 1 hour of our time. After we all went home Lauren began to edit, and ran into another problem. The film was too short. Upon hearing this news, my group members and I gave her tips and ideas to make the film longer and they worked. Unfortunately, our film didn’t turn out the way we envisioned, but we plan on fixing that during reshoots.

Filming Blog: First Day of Filming

Although my group members and I had many set backs, we finally began to film today. After school two of my group members, Aaliyah and Lauren, and I filmed one of our scenes today. We did this with the help of two of our friends Taliyah and Bobby. The scene that we filmed took place on the beach. The beach we went to was the one closest to our school: Fort Lauderdale Beach. After school ended Lauren’s mother picked us up and took us to the beach. Once we arrived at the beach, Lauren and I set up the camera and tripod in the perfect spot to begin filming. This segment of the scene was an establishing shot of the beach. While we were doing this, Aaliyah, Taliyah, and Bobby we’re preparing themselves for the scene. After this was  done, Lauren took a picture of the actors in two different positions. One position was the soon to be husband (Bobby) with his arms around both girls. The other position was the fiancés (Aaliyah and Bobby) posing as a couple while the bad sister (Taliyah) was off to the side doing something fun. In both pictures the actors were made to look like they were enjoying themselves. Afterwards, we took the camera off of the tripod and decided to do a hand-held shot. The person shooting with the camera was me. Once I had the camera in my hand, I began to film the actors walking along the beach. There were two different takes of this scene. In the first take the actors were taking a leisurely stroll alongside the beach shore side by side. In the second take the happy couple was walking together, holding hands, and conversing with each other while the bad sister was enviously watching them from behind. Once we did this we left the beach and headed to Lauren’s house. Unfortunately, Aaliyah and Taliyah has to leave early so we couldn’t film the rest of our scenes, but we were just greatfull to finally start filming. Anishkaneel also could not make it due to important personal reasons. Though, my group members and I, along with the two other actors, made a plan to continue and end filming Saturday morning.

Filming Blog: The Initiation

As I mentioned in my previous blog, my group members and I plan to begin filming on Thursday, February 27. The scenes that will be filmed are all of the ones that involve the beach, and a few of the house scenes. However, since we are running short on time, we tried to see if we could arrange a time to film today. The filming would’ve taken place at Lauren’s house. All of the scenes that involved only the character Autumn would’ve been shot. We planned to do this after school from about 5:00 or 5:30 to no later than 8:00 at night. Unfortunately, something came up with one of my group members, Aaliyah, who also happens to be playing Autumn. She could no longer get a ride to Lauren’s house. As a result, we could no longer film on this day. Though, the day did not go wasted.

Another group member, Anishkaneel, already made it to Lauren’s house when she found out that we could no longer film. Upon hearing this news, Lauren and Anishkaneel took the initiative to show a video as to how our scenes would look in the house. They took videos off of Lauren’s phone to show Aaliyah and I how they we visioning the house scenes. After recording all of the videos, they sent them to Aaliyah and I and awaited our feedback. We both loved the videos and how it would look in her house. In response, I personally said that we should include more different shots in our scenes, and everyone agreed. Throughout the rest of the time, we discussed what date we were available to film. We all agreed that Thursday and Saturday would be the best days. More specifically, after school on Thursday and early Saturday morning. During these days all of the actors will be available so that we can shoot all of the scenes.

Filming Blog: The Reschedule

When initially planning out our schedule, my group members and I tried to see if we could film over the weekend. We thought that weekend was ideal because, due to President’s Day, we had Monday off. However, things didn’t go as planned. One of my group members was busy every day except for Sunday after noon. Another one of my group members was busy Saturday and before noon on Sunday. I was available all days. We became excited thinking that we figured out the day we can film, Sunday. Unfortunately, we were disappointed because we found out that the other group member is busy all day Sunday. As a result, we didn’t film over the weekend. Though, we did plan to film the following weekend, but that didn’t work out because everyone, not including myself, had plans the whole weekend. When we came into class today, we discussed when we could begin to film. That date will be Thursday, February 27th.

When my group members and I were finalizing our planning blogs, it was brought to our attention that our movie pitch, the one we were planning on filming, already exists. The title of this movie is Seven. It was made in 1995. As a result, we decided to go with the pitch that Aaliyah made. Said pitch was a thriller about two sisters. One sister had the ideal life that the other wanted. The other sister will stop at nothing to take that life. Thankfully, the genre for this pitch and the previous one are the same so my group members and I didn’t have to research another genre. We regained our hope and are ready to begin filming.

Planning: Storyboard

Today in class we completed our storyboard. In total we used 10 pages to show all of our scenes. My group member Anishkaneel drew out all of the shots because she draws very neat and detailed. While she was drawing my other group members, Aaliyah and Lauren, and I guided her through the process. We were each reading our shooting and sound script to describe to her what was going on on the scenes. However, we ran into some trouble along the way. About half of our storyboard scenes were missing. As a result, we had to divide the first few storyboards amongst Aaliyah and Lauren. Thankfully we were able to finish it on time, and it turned well. We were able to clearly and effectively explain our scenes.

Planning: Planning Our Movie

Before we can begin the overall filming process of our movie, we had to finalize some important details to be sure we were all on the same page. In this powerpoint, you will see four different aspects of our planning process. This includes location, participants, health and safety, and schedule. In the location slides, we were sure to include where we were filming along with pictures of the settings. For the participants slides, we included both people who were seen in the movie and people who are going to be behind the scenes. For example, we included each characters' names along with the person who was playing them. We also included our director, filming crew, etc. For health and safety, we included a brief description on the safety regarding elements used in the film. We also added the names of our safety team. Lastly, our schedule. Here, we made a week-by-week plan of what is to be done. This includes filming, editing, re-shooting, etc.

Planning: Title Design

In this powerpoint we explored our options and came to a conclusion on the design of our titles.We explored six different areas. First, we decided what fonts and how many we were using. The fonts a big part of the titles because it feeds into all the other elements. Next, we talked about how the fonts we were using contrast in color and size with one another and what's going on in the scene. Then we explored spacing. This included leading, in between lines, and tracking, in between spaces. Then we came up with a working title for our movie. Right now we are calling it Misconstrued. Then we worked on how the titles will enter and leave the screen along with where they will appear. Lastly, we  said how long the titles will appear on the screen throughout the two minutes.

Planning Blog: Dialogue and Sound Script

Our group’s intention was to leave the effect of contrast in the opening. The scenes alternate between the present, after/during the murder, and before. This includes scenes where Summer, the sister, meets her twin’s groom. The key element in this is dialogue. The dialogue is used to show the conversations and events that occur leading up to the murder in present time (i.e. being chased), which is contrasted by the fond and serene conversations prior to it occurring. We also wanted the film to come with an eerie or anxious tone. In order to bring this out, we intend to use a soundtrack throughout the film. The music will include high and sharp notes, intended to be exciting and climatic. There will also be diegetic sound. This will include footsteps, the sounds of Autumn’s body against the wall, as well as the crash of a lamp. We decided to include this in hopes that it would give our film a raw and realistic feel to it, something that is crucial to our genre.

Planning Blog: Shooting Script

My group members and I created the script for this PowerPoint by each contributing ideas. We tried to keep everything in chronological order. to make sure that the film looked organized. We each threw in different ideas until we all could agree on the one that would best fit the film. For example, Aaliyah said that instead of starting our film from the beginning of the opening sequence we decided to start it from the ending of the film which includes the ending of the climax. The film will open with Aaliyah (the evil sister) washing blood off of her hands. In order for us to fill up each scene, Jahrvia came up with the idea to have each scene include a flashback. After an object is touched by the evil twin a flashback of a good memory will occur. Another thing that we did to create the script for the PowerPoint is to take a voice recording of everything that we say. We did this so that we could keep a record of good ideas that we might want to add to the film. By doing these things we were able to come up with a detailed PowerPoint of how the scenes in our film will play out.

Title Research: Silent Hill

1. How many titles are displayed during the opening sequences to the film?
There were 27 titles during the opening sequence.
2. What images are prioritized in the opening sequence?
The images prioritized were mainly the faces of the people being listed, but it was also on occasion of the environment that was used to shoot the opening scene.
3. What connotations do the images carry?
